The enigmatic Sphinx is a simple but finely constructed granite structure in the shape of a recumbent lion located just northwest of the Pyramid of Khufu.
It is carved from natural rock, and has the head of a pharaoh (generally believed to be Khafre) wearing the royal headdress.
Although weathering and deliberate distortion have caused much damage over the centuries, the Sphinx still conveys a powerful impression of architectural excellence and artistic achievement.
The total length of the statue is 73.5 meters, and its height is 20 meters.
