Navagio Beach on Zakynthos Island, Greece

Navagio Beach or Shipwreck Beach is located on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos.

Surrounded by shore Navagio is a limestone cliff that is only accessible by boat, and on the beach there is a wrecked ship of some stranded smugglers.

The beach is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Greece, attracting thousands of tourists every year. It is surrounded by limestone cliffs on three sides and is characterised by its charming white sand and pure blue waters.

 Getting to Navagio Beach

If you want to get to Navagio Beach, you will have to step on pebbles and swim in turquoise blue waters.

There is only one way by sea; there are many companies. Tourism Which offers boat trips (at a low price) to this most famous beach in Greece.

You will also visit other beautiful places off the coast of Zakynthos, such as the Blue Caves, and Xygia Sulphur Beach.

They are all amazing, but the number one unbeatable is of course Navagio Beach.

You have to keep in mind that Navagio Beach is the most commercial place on the island, and (as in Thailand).

You can take a tour, go there for a swim, take some pictures, and within 20 minutes you have to leave because the next ship full of tourists is waiting.

Pick a tour that you will go to early in the morning, and you will find the beach empty, not for long, for 15 minutes.

But this is enough to take amazing photos of the beach without any crowd of tourists, which may spoil the natural view of the beach.

Now, after visiting the beach itself, you should see it from above!

You will see how amazingly beautiful it is, much better than sea level.

Unfortunately, Navagio Beach is located on the other side of the capital of Zakynthos (which bears the same name).

However, you should consider that it will be very easy to find a tour or public bus that goes there.

It is the most famous place in Greece After all!

The best idea is to rent a car and drive, but problems start if you don't know how to drive.

You can get a public bus to the village of Anafonitria from the island's capital, then walk about 5 km (3 miles) to reach the viewing platform.

Buses are unreliable and infrequent, but the other alternative is a taxi, which will be a bit expensive, especially if you are travelling alone.

But if you can share it between 4 people, it will be fine.

To get a taxi from Zakynthos town and back with one hour to explore and enjoy the area will cost you 100 euros.

There is one tour you can do, called Back to The Roots, which is very cheap and costs 30 euros.

This tour does not go to any beaches, instead you will visit the island, local villages, churches and other attractions.

It also includes a viewing platform, from which you can see the beach from above.

Shipwreck story on the beach

You must be wondering how this ship ended up on the most beautiful beach in the world.

There are some stories; but did you know that it is said that the ship itself after it crashed formed the beach and caused the sand to accumulate around the unrealistic shade of blue of the water?

Some other theories state that the Greek government placed the wreckage there – just to attract more tourists.

But the most exciting is the official version: in the 1980s Greek officials chased the ship as it was suspected of smuggling alcohol and cigarettes to Zakynthos.

During a storm, the captain lost control of the ship and it crashed into a cave.

The perpetrators were brought to justice, but as the story went on before officials reached the wreckage, the locals had already discovered it and it was happy days for the island.

Tourists love to climb the shipwreck, take photos there, and also write on the walls of the horrific shipwreck to mark their visit.

Navagio Beach is stunning, and is best seen from above. However, if you like similar beaches but without the crowds, choose neighboring Albania.

The people are very friendly, the water is as clear as in Greece, and most importantly, you can spend as much quiet time as you want among the beautiful natural areas.
