Aside from the main path leading to the tower, there are other marked walking trails that take you through lush, picturesque forests that give you a different perspective than the more crowded city centre below.

3. Faetano Town

The town of Faetano is one of the nine municipalities that make up the Catelli in San Marino and was part of neighbouring Rimini in Italy, until it became part of San Marino in the 15th century.

A quiet area of San Marino with just over 1,000 inhabitants, visitors take a trip to Faetano to see the Church of San Paolo Apostolo as well as the attractive Town Hall.

Visitors can spend a leisurely day wandering the small streets of Faetano and soaking up the local atmosphere as well as trying some local food and wine.

4. Montegiardino

Montegiardino, one of the nine communes of San Marino, is famous for being a university town, the only one in San Marino in fact, and home to the University of the Republic of San Marino.

The city is often described as the most beautiful in San Marino and has the relaxed, intellectual atmosphere of university towns around the world.

Furthermore you can enjoy the well-established cafe culture here as you spend a few hours trying out the local food and drink including the special flatbread sandwiches called piadina which are also popular in neighbouring provinces of Italy.

5. Borgo Maggiore City

Borgo Maggiore began life as a quiet village and has grown into the modern city that is one of the largest residential areas in San Marino.

It is famous for its street markets that are held every Thursday from early morning until around 2pm.

The first markets in Borgo Maggiore are said to have been held in the 13th century, so if you come here, know that you are shopping in a place with a long and proud history.

The markets used to sell livestock but nowadays you are more likely to find fresh local produce and household items as well as arts and crafts from the area.

The city is also connected to San Marino by a funicular that allows you to enjoy beautiful views over the state as you ascend.

6. Dogana

The town of Dogana is found in northern San Marino near the border with Rimini.

As such, the city serves as a major entry and exit point for visitors wishing to travel to San Marino.

The name Dogana literally translates to “customs” although there are no border checkpoints when you enter or exit San Marino.

The main buses that go from Italy to the state usually stop at several shopping centers located in Dogana.

Here you can buy duty free goods and souvenirs including local arts and crafts.

7. Palazzo Publico Square

Palazzo Pubblico in San Marino is easily recognizable due to its Gothic style and ornate facade.

It is the official city hall of the state and all major government events and celebrations are held here.

Built from stone taken from nearby Mount Titano, the building dates back to the 19th century.

As you approach, you'll notice a square clock tower that tops the building and features battlements that echo the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
