The answer to this question depends on the criteria used for the term “large.” 

Do we measure the number of species in the cages or the total area of the zoo?

But just thinking about the number of species doesn't seem to be enough to figure it out.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a non-profit zoo located north of Columbus, Ohio.

The Columbus Zoo houses more than 5,000 animals representing more than 700 species from geographic regions around the world.

In 2004, the zoo began work to expand 82 acres (37 ha) over the next ten years.

In addition, a 120-acre expansion is planned to include an arctic environment in addition to the African savanna.

But all animals can be seen outdoors.

Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo in New York City is the largest urban zoo in the United States.

It includes 265 acres (107 hectares) of park land and natural habitat.

This zoo is also home to more than 4,000 animals from 650 species, many of which are endangered.

Beijing Zoo

Founded in 1906 during the late Qing Dynasty, this zoo houses one of the largest animal collections in China.

It is home to 14,500 animals representing more than 450 species of land animals and more than 500 species of marine animals.

While it occupies an area of 219 acres (89 hectares).

Beijing Zoo is also famous for its collection of rare animals endemic to China including the giant panda, which is the biggest draw for people to the park.

Berlin Zoo

Established in 1844, this is the oldest and most famous zoo in Germany.

It covers an area of 84 acres (34 hectares) and is located in Berlin.

With more than 1,500 different species and around 17,000 animals, the zoo offers the largest collection of species in the world.

Famous residents of the zoo include Bao Bao the giant panda and Knut the polar bear (Knut died unexpectedly in March 2011).

The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is Nebraska's first attraction.

It is home to about 17,000 animals of 962 species.

In addition, it covers more than 130 acres (53 hectares) of land area.

The park also includes the largest cat complex in North America, and the largest indoor swamp in the world.

And the world's largest inland desert, as well as the world's largest glass geodesic dome.
