In the middle of the lake is the imaginary island of Bled, on which the ancient pilgrimage church still stands to this day.
The church in its present form dates back to the late 17th century, and is decorated with much older frescoes.
Locals say that weddings held in this church included an ancient tradition where the groom carries his bride up 98 steps leading to the church.
The lake is also surrounded by the Julian Alps in northern Slovenia, about 35 miles from Ljubljana.

Butrotom, or Butrint in Albanian, is one of the most distinctive historical destinations in Albania.
