Robben Island
Robben Island is located just off the coast of Cape Town.
For three centuries, Robben Island has been used as a military base, a hospital for those suffering from socially unacceptable diseases that required complete isolation such as leprosy, and as a prison for political prisoners.
One of the most famous figures to have been imprisoned here was Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned here for 18 years; and who became President of South Africa after his release.
Today Robben Island is one of Cape Town's most popular tourist attractions and can be reached by ferry from the above mentioned waterfront.

Located within a national park, reaching its summit is an exciting experience offering stunning views of Cape Town and Robben Island to the north and the Atlantic coast to the west and south.
The summit is 1,086 metres (3,563 ft) high, and can be easily reached by cable car.
Each cable car cabin also features rotating floors that allow passengers to enjoy 360-degree views during the ride to the top.
